"For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved."  John 3:16-17

Christmas is a great time of the year to think about the greatest gift that has ever been given.  Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day, is the most precious gift we could ever receive.  This simple message of the gospel still has the power to change people's lives.  I was reminded of this truth this week as I was teaching my chronological Bible study to a group of men in town.

This Bible study was started in 2009 when we first arrived in Liberia.  We had a broken freezer, so I went to the Climate Control Cooling Center in our town.  I was looking for someone who thought they could fix it.  Well, we never did get the freezer fixed, but God used the broken freezer to start a Bible study.  Arthur is the owner of the business.  He is from the Grebo tribe in shoutheast Liberia.  Arthur's father was a very prominent and powerful Zoe or witch doctor in their town.  Arthur remembers as a boy watching his father offer sacrifices of chicken and rice to the spirits, so the town people would have a successful crop that year.  Later in life, Arthur got a job on a large ship sailing from Africa to Europe.  This lifestyle led to both selling and using drugs.  After the war, he was trained by the United Nations to repair AC units.  In time, he opened his own shop in our town.  When I first met Arthur, he struggled with many things and did not know the truth about God.  In time, as he understood the gospel message and the truths of the Bible, God changed his life.  He has been baptized, and he is an active member of his church.  Every year or two he takes on around 10 new young adults and older teenagers and trains them on how to fix AC units, but more importantly, he has a desire for them to know God.  He allows me to come to his shop 3 mornings a week to teach the Bible and share the gospel message with them.  This week I was so impressed with how God has changed his life over the years.  He now challenges the group of young trainees in the things of God.  At prayer time, he says loudly, "this man can smoke drugs" and "this man can drink too much."  He tells them that God can change them just like God has changed him.  He says, "Brother Jamey, please pray for all of us that God will change us."

We have also been concerned about the neighbor children and teenageers.  We have witnessed in the last few months many of them getting involved with drinking, drugs, stealing, etc..  Many of them need to be changed by hearing, obeying, and trusting, the gospel.  So we decided, with the help of the neighborhood boys, we would build a new football (soccer) field in our yard.  We also have a place where the neighborhood girls can come play kickball.  Almost every evening we have about 50 kids in the yard playing soccer and kickball and having fun.  Our missioanry friend, Matt, will come and have devotions with the boys.  Kandi is trying to reach out to the girls.  It is a little loud, but it has been a blessing.

Thank you for your prayers and fincancial support this year.

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas!

In Christ,

The Mathews Family
